Guitars Alive VIII |
This year's main event was a special one. Guitars Alive VIII took place on Saturday, April 10th, 2010 at 7:30pm and featured more high level local talent than ever before!
Again there were many requests for performing time in the first half. Participating school guitar ensembles this year were: Larchwood, Chelmsford and Levack Public School Guitar Ensembles; Lively and Lasalle Secondary School Guitar Ensembles, the Lasalle Bluegrass Duo, three guitar ensembles from Cambrian College and this year's featured soloist Jamie Dupuis, a talented guitarist in his 2nd year at Cambrian College. Following an intermission, Guitars Alive presented a "Guitar Party" - celebrating 100 years of the guitar in its many forms and styles, from classical to blues and from jazz to rock. This unique and exciting retrospective of the guitar was conceived by Dan Vaillancourt. Philip Candelaria began the party with "Berimbau" an arrangement of a Brazilian guitar solo done by an Argentine guitarist. This was followed by some country blues, electric Chicago blues, Parisien gypsy jazz, cool jazz, rock, blues rock, and finally some funk for the finale. Sudbury's top guitarists turned out to treat the audience to this smorgasbord of guitar styles. We thank the Sudbury public for turning out for our main event and we thank our sponsors for their generosity and support: Mike Whalen at Re/Max, Cambrian College, Laurentian University Music, Pat & Mario's restaurant, Prom Music, Joe Natale at RBC Dominion Securities, and Daryl Foreshew, registered massage therapist. Our "Guitar Party" featured many of our area's top musicians including guitarists Philip Candelaria, Gary DiSalle, Paul Dunn, Marc Savard, Paul DiSalle and Dan Vaillancourt; along with the gypsy jazz trio "Sunnyside Paris", vocalists Sarah Craig and Hilary Welch; all backed up by an amazing house band consisting of Jean-Yves Begin (Sax), Peter Scherzinger (Trumpet), Brian Quebec (Bass) and Sean Perras (Drums). A Special thanks to Dan Vaillancourt for the design and concept of this "Guitar Party" event. |
