Guitars Alive II |
Guitars Alive II took place on March 27th, 2004 and used the same successful formula as Guitars Alive I: presenting student guitar ensembles in the first half from elementary and secondary schools, followed by college and university levels. Then, after intermission, the professionals took over the stage.Guitars Alive II again relied upon the ensembles directed by the concert’s producers Philip Candelaria, Paul Dunn and Gary DiSalle. MacLeod Public School presented both its Junior and Intermediate Guitar Ensembles under the direction of Paul Dunn. Then it was the Sudbury Secondary Northstar Guitar Ensemble directed by Gary DiSalle and the Cambrian College Guitar Ensemble directed by Philip Candelaria. Then there were two numbers by Cambrian College quartets and the first half ended with Laurentian University classical guitar soloist Allan Yzereef, who was studying with Philip Candelaria. After intermission, the producers showcased their own guitar talents joined by well known local singer songwriter Kevin Closs. Philip Candelaria began with guitar solos, then was joined by Paul Dunn in a duet, and the progression continued with a trio performed by all three Guitars Alive producers. Then Gary and Paul did Sweet Georgia Brown in duet and Gary an original solo assisted by Dan Ayotte on drums and Emilio Falbo on bass. Special guest Kevin Closs then took the stage for four numbers and the concert ended with the quartet of Candelaria, Closs, Dunn and DiSalle performing to a standing ovation. With a near packed house, Guitars Alive II was even more successful than Guitars Alive I. and it seemed that a Sudbury tradition had been born.
